Este mecanismo se produce internamente durante toda la vida de una persona, y permite reparar el da\u00f1o, renovar el tejido, mantener la homeostasis de calcio en sangre y actualizar la microarquitectura interna para adaptarla constantemente a las solicitaciones mec\u00e1nicas. Todas estas funciones muy especializadas son realizadas por las acciones coordinadas de osteoblastos (c\u00e9lulas formadoras) y osteoclastos (c\u00e9lulas removedoras de tejido), formando la unidad b\u00e1sica multicelular (UBM) que, ante condiciones normales, mantiene un equilibrio del tejido y su composici\u00f3n. Si bien en personas j\u00f3venes y sanas este mecanismo es claramente beneficioso, existen factores naturales y patol\u00f3gicos que modifican dicho equilibrio, conduciendo a una resorci\u00f3n \u00f3sea neta que, en algunos casos, se torna perjudicial. Entre estos casos, se encuentran la menopausia en mujeres y el proceso de envejecimiento que afecta a todas las personas. El deterioro devenido de estos procesos debilita a los huesos y puede tener consecuencias altamente perjudiciales que, en muchos casos, requieren del implante de pr\u00f3tesis para solucionar problemas de fractura o desgaste excesivo.
